Romantic Figures 4 is a series of six playful prints reminiscent of illustrated playing cards. The series is a delightful mash-up of early synthetic Cubist sentiments and bold German Expressionist figures. Synthetic Cubism of the early 20th century began to blur the boundaries between painting and sculpture by offering a new understanding of the pictorial surface. During the same time, German Expressionism broke away from traditional norms of representing the human figure. The Joker makes an appearance in Romantic Figures 4. Here, the influence of Picasso's Cubist harlequin motif is evident in the Joker's one-eye triangular face and hat as well as in his disjointed pantaloons. Part of the exclusive ART by TA Collection, Romantic Figures 4 offers a striking portrayal of Synthetic Cubism and German Expressionism in this original series of works. |
